PH of Drinking Water
Considered as one of the crucial elements for survival, water has multiple constituents which say a lot about its quality. Water consists of a number of dissolved salts, impurities, and minerals. Mineral water or packaged drinking water or the tap water that we consume on a daily basis has four basic properties; pH, buffering capacity, salinity, and general hardness. Among these four properties, the pH level of water holds great importance. Let us know about the pH of drinking water in detail.
S.P.L. Sorensen, a Danish chemist, was the first person to introduce the concept of pH scale and its impact on human health.
pH level
The term pH stands for potential hydrogen or power of hydrogen. pH value is used to measure the level of acidity and alkalinity in various liquids including water. The range of pH scales varies between 0-14 wherein 7.0 is the normal pH level. It is essential to check the pH value of drinking water. Drinking acidic water can lead to a number of problems such as weight gain, slow immune response as well as an invitation to many diseases.
Rarely available Pure water has the right pH level. Factors such as bedrock, and soil composition influence the pH scale of water. The pH value of drinking water should not exceed 7. Water with a pH level of less than 7 has a corrosive quality with a metallic taste. Moreover, Water with a high alkaline level forms or precipitates on the plumbing fixture which leads to a number of health problems.
pH affects the drinking water in the following ways–
-Characteristics: At extreme levels, the physical characteristics of water such as color, odor, turbidity, or taste are affected by pH.
-Taste: Water with low pH value gives a sour or metallic taste, and high pH a bitter or baking soda taste.
-Corrosiveness: pH is one of the factors responsible for water to be more or less corrosive. A neutral pH 7 distilled water is often corrosive because it is devoid of minerals and easily absorbs materials it contacts including metals.
-Disinfection: Chlorine is the most popular & accepted water disinfection agent in the world. pH has an impact on its effectiveness. As per WHO’s guidelines, pH of water should be under 8 for chlorine to be effective for the disinfection of water supplies. At a pH of 6.5, 92% of the disinfection agents from chlorine are present, but at a pH of 8.5, this comes down to 11%.
Always consume clean, germ and pollutant free water that maintains the standard pH of drinking water.
